[MWForum] Looking for a Life Science Project

The gene is a set of instruction that is not read linearly. Each bit of
information is called and used at the time it is needed bu signals from other
cells or the environment. I have used the pick command to model this behavior.
Of course mating of two individuals also provides a simple set of two
instruction s that can be chosen from.
For example, you could draw two faces by writing subroutines for eyes,
nose, mouth, face shape, ears etc. Then you could "breed" the two faces by
having a program that draws a face selecting at random from one or the other
face:
pick [eye1 eye2]
You will end up creating a large array of faces with intermediate
characteristics between the two; just like children. Gives a good feel for
genetics and how genes work.

Attention Teachers

I am looking for a Life Science project doable with MicroWorlds. The project
is for my 16 year old grandson who thinks he would, one day, like to work in
the field of Gene Research, or botany, or some life science related field.

I'm having difficulty coming up with an introductory project that he might
do with MicroWorlds. My background is in the field of Engineering &
Programming (I know very little about fruit flies and there offspring).

Can anyone define an appropriate project for us?

Thanks
J.
